Introduction
The aim of this laboratory is to construct a visible light spectrophotometer using
everyday materials and to use it to measure the concentration of various chromophore
and ionic salt solutions.
The lab will require basic skills in construction and electronics and is designed to
enhance your knowledge of spectrophotometry and optical absorption.
The lab comprises five tasks as follows:
Task 1 – Construction of spectrophotometer body
Task 2 – Optoelectronic circuit
Task 3 – Testing and evaluation/trial measurements
Task 4 – Measurement, and analysis of results
Task 5 – Validation of results against a commercial spectrophotometer
You will be required to work in pairs. The laboratory will be assessed by completion
of a joint lab report detailing your work (approximately 4000 words). More details will
be given during the lab sessions.
