Learning Goal: I’m working on a english multi-part question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
Choose one scholarly, peer reviewed article or one article from a professional or trade organization in your field. My field is Civil Engineering . The article should be an article that your are considering using for your annotated bibliography later in the semester.
(It will be tempting to summarize the source you’re using for your blog, but I am asking you to find something different here. Part of what I’m trying to do is to get you to continue to work on your research so you’re learning more about your topic and collecting sources throughout the semester, not leaving it to the last minute! The source can be scholarly or non-scholarly for this activity.)
Initial response:
First, post a brief summary of the article you have selected.
Second, based on your posting and on the reading you completed this week on summaries, answer the following questions:
How did you decide what to exclude and what to include in the summary? What did you leave out? Why?
What tone and purpose did you choose as most appropriate for the summary? Why?
What changes would you make if you decide to use this article in the annotated bibliography (instructions to the annotated bibliography may be found in the Course Documents folder)?
Did you include one or more signal phrases? If not, where should you have and what kind of signal phrase would work best?
here is an example of what I need
Article: Howell, B. A. M. (2021). Battling Burnout at the Frontlines of Health Care Amid COVID-19. AACN Advanced Critical Care, 32(2), 195–203. https://doi.org/10.4037/aacnacc2021454Summary:Even before the start of the coronavirus pandemic in late 2019, careers in healthcare were considered to be some of the most draining paths for a professional to go down. Due to the lack of American action towards containing the spread of the virus, hospitals were jammed packed with patients that needed urgent care. In fact, many hospitals were overflowing with patients, causing stressful environments for nurses and doctors that were on the frontlines of fighting to “flatten the curve.” Due to the extreme amount of stress that healthcare professionals were put under, many felt the common psychological impact that humans encounter when dealing with a widespread disease or disaster. This caused mutual feelings of doubt, mistrust, and hostility between healthcare workers and the healthcare system due to how close in proximity they were to the effects of the pandemic. The mental burdens of patients dying due to the lack of resources and funds provided by hospitals were too much to bear for healthcare workers. This, among with many other factors such as staff shortages, long working hours, and an overall lack of work-life balance has caused burnout for many healthcare professionals, which has ultimately resulted in job dissatisfaction within the field. With all of the burnt out nurses and doctors on the rise due to the global coronavirus pandemic, many worry of the safety of the patients as well. Questions:How did you decide what to exclude and what to include in the summary? What did you leave out? Why?
The article that I read was jam packed with information about the topic of burnout in healthcare environments due to the coronavirus pandemic. This meant many statistics and facts that were too specific for a summary. In fact, this article conducted a whole study in regards to workplace burnout in hospitals, with numbers and many trials, but I didn’t want to get into the nitty gritty. I decided to write about the bare main topics that I could identify while I was reading that I believe summed up the article pretty well. What tone and purpose did you choose as most appropriate for the summary? Why?
I tried to use a professional, yet concise tone for this article by summarizing the main points of the article. I tried to include the cause of the problem, as well as the outcomes that the pandemic was causing. I wrote the summary with the purpose of informing my audience of how severe the burnout is with healthcare professionals and how it would be detrimental to many people if nurses/doctors were to continue in their current mental state. What changes would you make if you decide to use this article in the annotated bibliography (instructions to the annotated bibliography may be found in the Course Documents folder)?
I think that the summary portion of this article would be fine for my annotated bibliography. Perhaps I could include some of those statistics that I mentioned in an earlier question for this article to be more distinguishable in the study that it had conducted. In addition, I would definately have to research more about the author and audience as well. For example, who is the author and are they qualified to write this article? Did you include one or more signal phrases? If not, where should you have and what kind of signal phrase would work best?
I don’t think that I used signal phrases in this summary. I feel like signal phrases will be more appropriate when I actually write my blog instead of a short and brief summary. For example, in my blog, I’ll have to paraphrase the words of the original author to formulate an argument, but I feel like a summary is just the main points of an argument summed up conveniently. If I were to use signal phrases, I think that something along the lines of “According to the study perfomed by Beverly Howell at AACN Publishing…” will be sufficient.
I tried to include the cause of the problem, as well as the outcomes that the pandemic was causing.
